Often mistaken for Australia’s capital city, Sydney
is Australia’s largest city, with a population
of approximately 4 million people. Sydney city
sits right on a beautiful harbour, from which the nation
of Australia was declared. It is famous for the
two most recognisable tourist attractions in the country
– The Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera
House.
There are many tertiary institutions
around Australia, and Sydney has its fair share.
Universities, private and public colleges, English language
institutions and technical colleges are scattered around
the metropolitan area, as well as regional areas in
the state of New South Wales.
The climate in Sydney is ever changing,
with different conditions to contend with. In
winter it is cool but sunny, and in summer, it can be
hot and humid, and sometimes rainy (but usually sunny).
Being a larger sized city, it is
difficult to get around by car, so the public transport
system is well utilised. Locals catch buses, trains
and ferries into the city and other surrounding suburbs,
as well as the township of Parramatta. There is
a wonderful array of restaurants and cafes to choose from,
and the beach is only 25 minutes east of the city.
You can also do some celebrity watching in the eastern
suburbs, where Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman
all have houses!
