FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Australia a safe destination to study and live in?

Yes, Australia is one of the safest countries in the world, largely as it is a continent and island of its own, and quite a way away from the rest of the world.  The people are very friendly and accepting of all cultures, nationalities, religions and genders.  The crime rate is very low and due to a small population and plenty of available space, people don’t tend to get in each other’s way!

Australia is a democracy with local, state and federal governments all chosen by the people.  There is political stability and a willingness to give all people a ‘fair go.’

Which are the best universities in Australia?

All universities in Australia are of world-standard, each specialising in different areas which make them unique.  Institutions must abide by strict codes set by the government through legislation and the education department.

All Australian institutions offering programmes of study for international students must be registered with The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS), and have a CRICOS Provider Code.  Each individual programme offered must have its own CRICOS Code.

The Department of Education, Science and Training regulates the education and training sector’s involvement with overseas students studying in Australia on student visas.  It does this through the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act and associated legislation which protects the interests of these students by providing tuition and financial assurance.  The legislation mandates a nationally consistent approach to registering education providers so that the quality of the tuition, and associated pastoral services offered to students, remains high.

Where should I study?

Both the destination and institution is determined by yourself.  Ultimately you make the decision, but our experienced counsellors will assist you in this process.  Education is so important, and you want to make the most of it, so please allow us to provide the best possible information and guidance that we can, in order for you to make that final decision.

We are here to help you – it is only in our best interests to do so.  We will talk to you about different institutions, what each destination offers and what your interests of study and job opportunities hold.  Kaviam Education is based in Australia so we are qualified to do this.  We only ask that you think carefully about what you want, so that we can be more effective for you.

We at Kaviam Education invite you as an individual, or with support from your family (which we strongly encourage) to meet with our counsellors to discuss your options.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.  It is the recognised authority for English ability in Australia, and is a requirement in order for international students to get a student visa for Australia.  Almost all institutions require certain results from the IELTS test in order to meet their English entry requirements.

Bachelor degrees usually take 3 years to complete.  Students are usually required to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0 overall academic.  Standard bachelor degrees range from $AUD14,000 - $17,000 per year.

Post graduate qualifications are from 6 months to 2 years.  The IELTS requirement is usually 6.5 overall in the academic test, and fees range from $15,000 - $22,000 per year.

What sort of climate does Australia have?

There are different climates around Australia – it is the sixth biggest country in the world, don’t forget!  Australia enjoys a largely temperate climate.  Most of Australia receives more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, or an amazing 70 per cent of the total possible hours!  The state of Queensland is tropical, with sun most of the year and high levels of humidity following rainy periods.  In South Australia and Western Australia, the dry heat of summer is a contrast to cool and wet winters.  With the dry climate being so predominant in the country, Australia has the perfect environment for growing grapes, which has made it the fastest growing wine industry in the world.

What are the accommodation options like and how do I arrange it?

Accommodation in Australia is very available and very affordable!  All states and territories have similar accommodation styles.  Some institutions offer on-campus accommodation which the institutions will arrange for you.

Off campus accommodation options vary, but include units, apartments, townhouses and houses, where students can either live by themselves or rent with other students and locals.  Homestay options are also available, where students live with a local Australian family who provide accommodation and meals.

Accommodation is available near the institution, surrounding suburbs, in the capital cities and by the beach.  There are so many options to choose from and Kaviam Education will not only provide you with the options, but also arrange it for you as well.

Don’t forget that most Australian families don’t have servants to help around the house, so you will soon become accustomed to cooking your own food, washing your own clothes and keeping your accommodation clean!

What do I do when I arrive at the airport in Australia?

Is it easy to meet other students and make friends?

In Australia, everyone is your ‘mate!” You will find Australian people very friendly, welcoming and caring people, and they just love international students. Local Australian students will dominate university populations, and you will meet a lot of Australian and other international students in your institution.

Most universities have student groups who meet and go out regularly.  You will soon come to know of other Indian students studying at your institution, as well as other international students. Each state holds festivals of different cultures each year, which is a great opportunity to meet locals and students from other nationalities.

What do I do when I am not studying?

Exactly what you do at home!  It is important to note that all Australian universities have several types of prayer rooms for all different religions.  Australia celebrates and respects all religions, and you will find many churches, temples, mosques and other places of worship all over the country.

You will find many entertainment options in Australia.  Local Aussies like to go out to eat regularly, they meet friends in restaurants, cafes and bars.  They dance in nightclubs and they go to the beach and swim in hot weather.  Of course they like to shop too and pursue sports and hobby interests.  Australians are big lovers of sports especially, and watch the Australian Rules Football in winter and the cricket in summer.

Of course, you are coming to Australia to study, so it is a matter of getting your priorities right…!

What If I Am Sick Or Have An Accident?

Australian medical facilities are considered amongst the best in the world.  Some universities have a hospital on campus, and just about all universities have doctor’s surgeries for you to visit should the need arise.

You will be covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as it is compulsory, so you will be covered for almost all incidences that could occur.  Universities even have OSHC representatives who can speak to you about your options.

What if I am homesick?

From time to time, most students fall homesick especially in their first term.  It is important to know that this is normal and not unexpected.  Students are sometimes under stress from being in a new environment; they miss their family, friends and lifestyle and may find difficulties in adjusting to their studies.  Institutions provide personal and confidential counselling for all students, for academic, financial and personal issues.  They are trained professionals and can also recommend some organisations, clubs and international student associations that you can join, to know that you are not alone.

You also have the piece of mind in knowing that Kaviam Education has its head office in Sydney, so you have someone in Australia who travels interstate regularly, who you can speak to and count on.
